Alfaz del PiLandscapeStretching through an area of 19 square kilometres, Alfaz del Pi offers beautiful views and wonderful nature, from the sea to the impressive mountains and pine woods. The pine has become a symbol for the area. The coastline starts at the beach in Albir, following a rocky terrain up to the magnificent mountain of Sierra Helada. Here, one of the steepest clifs of the whole Mediterranean is situated. The beach in Albir has won prizes for its qualty, and is known for clean water. A nice place to have a swim, or just cool down by the waterside. From the beach, you can enjoy one of the most beautiful views of the cost, and the well-known "Penn de Ifach" in the background. Behind the coastline the town is situated. Cultural activitiesIn Alfaz del Pi you can pick from a wide spread cultural event calender, supported by the towns cultural hall, Casa Cultura. Which, with its 4000 square metres gives room to several service offers, like auditoriums, radio and television studios, library, showrooms, aulas, workshops, etc. In the Casa Cultura the annual film festival is also held, as well as several courses and activities for both tourists and residens. Fiesta and traditionsAlfaz del Pi has kept its traditional "fiestas". In the autumn one celebrate the main fiesta, to honor Jesus Christ. Between the 7. and 10. of November, you*ll find parades and chariots. During the first week in May, the fiesta "La Creuta" takes place, also a honour to a saint. SportsAlfaz has big sports venue with racing tracks, a track and field ground, soccer stadium, gym, tennis court and squash court. In Albir, there is a small gym where you can do aerobics, learn tai chi, pilates and kung fu. A lot of athletes attend training camps in the area through the winter because of the good weather conditions, and the new wide roads leading to Guadalest are among cyclists favourite routs. HistoryAlfaz del Pi has been a melting point for various cultures, a place where people from different origins have been travelling through. It is a confirmation of the Romans presence in this area. Alfaz del Pi has also been a bufferzone in the wars between the Christians and the Moorish that originally named the city. Under the XII century, Jaime I ruled the city, and in the XVI and XVII century it suffered the crusades of the berberian pirates. The consolidation of the city centre took place under the ruling of the Bourbons, and the town was finally declared independent in 1836. |
